Last year in October (2013), Penguin Education came to visit our lovely preppies to introduce to them a new app called Who Lives Here? Our preppies have iPads as part of the school’s iPad program so it was a great idea for our little students to test out the app.
Here is a look at what they thought.
You can read more about the app on the Penguin Teachers’ Academy blog.
In October, an ISTE group came to visit Debney Meadows PS as part of their Australia tour, whilst also attending the ACEC2012 conference in Perth. We were lucky to have the group visit us at school and allow our children to showcase their learning so enthusiastically. Ellen, Director of Technology at The Cathedral School, one of the group members has collated her photos and passed them on to us to enjoy.

Visiting Debney Meadows Primary was one of the highlights of the study tour. I so appreciate the time it took you to prepare for our visit and for you, your students, and your teachers to so warmly share your special school with us.
Thank you Ellen for generously taking the time to put this video together.
Our students are inherently curious. They bring with them a sense of wonder and awe. By providing our students access to mobile technologies we can help them achieve some of their dreams. The iPads are not just a gimmick or used to replace traditional learning, but rather a window to a larger world of knowing, doing and being. They help the children learn new concepts, consolidate understandings, and make connections with prior knowledge. They are not just mere consumers but in fact, producers of knowledge and content. The students read, write and create records of their learning progress and use these to reflect and build upon their achievement.

Who is part of the program?
2011 – Year Preps
2012 – Year Prep to Year 1
2013 – Year Prep to Year 2
How do I found out more?
You can contact the school to find out more information. If you are a teacher or a parent we invite you to come and have a look at what we do in the school. Our students and teachers would be very happy to spend some time with you.

A few weeks ago, Adam Bandt MP who is also our local Federal member, came for a visit to the school. He enjoyed seeing all the school but took some extra time in the Prep classroom learning more about how to use the iPads for learning. Issan was a great help and shared many apps with Adam.
On Wednesday 23rd November, 2011 the Prep class from Debney Meadows Primary School went on an excursion to ArtPlay at Birrarung Marr. The students took part in a Lego workshop contributing to Building the Green City of the Future.
While at the workshop students had the opportunity to think about what designs they may create, have access to thousands of pieces of Lego & have ample time to create their constructions in a friendly & supportive environment.
The DMPS students were also able to bring along their iPads to the workshop. They were able to take photos of their time at the Artplay workshop and of their Lego creations. These photos then became a basis of their literacy focus back at school. On the following day the students used their photos to create language experience books on their iPads. The students used the Book Creator application that creates personalised books which utilises photos taken by the students and text created by them.
What a great experience!
During the last week of term 3, we opened up our school for parents to come in and see the great things that we were doing. Our parents joined in the fun and decided to be the learners in the prep classroom. Our preppies were not too shy to show of their new skills, creations, and even read and share an online book or two.
Check out our learning!
The smiles were priceless!
