Preps super stars at The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation luncheon

Our preppies stole the show as they performed for the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation luncheon for Young Philanthropists. The preps performed three songs on stage with their Song Room teaching artist, Zoё. Their teacher, Flora took them to the special event.

They wrote a song about the experience in class to the tune of Frere Jacque.

Playing PE
Saw a big bus
Took us to the Town Hall
Lucky us!

We practiced and practiced
Ate fruit with a fork
Orange juice in glasses
We lined up in the dark

Stepping up the stairs
Walking on the stage
Samakab didn’t have a partner
The audience laughed!

We felt happy
We sang loud
We felt shy and scared
We felt proud!

ArtPlay + iPads = Creativity

On Wednesday 23rd November, 2011 the Prep class from Debney Meadows Primary School went on an excursion to ArtPlay at Birrarung Marr. The students took part in a Lego workshop contributing to Building the Green City of the Future.

While at the workshop students had the opportunity to think about what designs they may create, have access to thousands of pieces of Lego & have ample time to create their constructions in a friendly & supportive environment.

The DMPS students were also able to bring along their iPads to the workshop. They were able to take photos of their time at the Artplay workshop and of their Lego creations. These photos then became a basis of their literacy focus back at school. On the following day the students used their photos to create language experience books on their iPads. The students used the Book Creator application that creates personalised books which utilises photos taken by the students and text created by them.

What a great experience!

Having fun with our iPads and Preppies

During the last week of term 3, we opened up our school for parents to come in and see the great things that we were doing. Our parents joined in the fun and decided to be the learners in the prep classroom. Our preppies were not too shy to show of their new skills, creations, and even read and share an online book or two.

Check out our learning!

Orange Blossom

Orange Blossom

Our preppies were learning to plant an orange tree in our school garden. After much team effort the children came away to write about their experience. I was much impressed when one of the Preps dropped by my office to share her fabulous writing. Of course she received a gold principal sticker for her efforts and lots of discussion about what she had learnt.

Now to watch the oranges grow.
